Generally, the Art of Bonsai Project holds very high standards regarding photograph quality and the editors here at AoB have rejected many otherwise great galleries solely because of poor picture quality. However, occasionally we receive images that show incredible bonsai, innovations, or other material deemed important by the editorial staff and a decision must be made as to uphold our standards or relax them in order to show something we feel is important and relevant to the bonsai community.

In the case of this particular gallery, we have decided to relax our usually stringent standards in order to show the work of I Gede Mertha. We hope our readers will agree that this was the right decision.

The Bonsai of I Gede Mertha

I Gede Mertha was born in Karang Asem, Bali on June 2, 1965. He currently has one wife and two children.

He started doing bonsai in 1985. Initially he learned bonsai himself from books and pictures; later in 1989, he met Gede Sulistyo who became his bonsai mentor.

In the beginning bonsai was just a hobby for Gede, as he found bonsai to be an expression of nature in miniature. Later on, he found that bonsai could be a means in which he could express his emotion and sense of art. It could also help in earning money.

His main intention in bonsai is to get a peaceful mind that is in line with the nature surround him. He claims to have inherited all his artistic talent from his father, who was a Balinese traditional artist.

Besides doing bonsai, Gede practices painting, sculpturing, and Adenium shaping. (Adenium is a plant like miniature francipani that can be shaped like bonsai. However, this succulent is not considered as bonsai in Indonesia) Currently Gede is writing a book on Adenium.

Special thanks to Gede Sulistyo for his help in obtaining and publishing this gallery.
