Bob's first interest in Bonsai started while he was serving in the Far East as an Air Force Jet Engine Mechanic. After returning to the states, his interests ran more towards motorcycles, cars, horses and things that were a little more "fast paced" and it wasn't until many years later that he slowed down and rekindled his interest in Bonsai.
For the past eight years, he has served as the President of the Badger Bonsai Society in Madison, Wisconsin. Bob conducts workshops at the club meetings and also do demonstrations and workshops at other clubs in Wisconsin and other states. Bob also teaches (mini course) classes in Bonsai at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, plus does demonstrations and workshops at schools, garden clubs, or wherever he may be able to educate people in the art of Bonsai. Sometimes, it is quite difficult to show people what Bonsai really is because they think only of trees like the small garden junipers (procumbens) they see at garden centers, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or for sale by street vendors.
He believes that one of his greatest pleasures is taking raw material from the wild or someone's lawn (with permission of course) and creating a living piece of art.
Bob has created one drawing each winter for the past 12 years, he puts the originals up for raffle during each holiday dinner of the Badger Bonsai Society.
