Judge Comments:

"One of the best of the conifers, The very strong base which looks like the back of the root system works as the tree seems to turn around and do a double take. Very nice for butt in your face! Killer tree, Great match with pot too!" - Guy Guidry

"Nice composition and preparation. The relatively juvenile branches (no taper) detract from the overall presentation. The guy-wire is distracting; wired branches on a conifer are just fine, but visible guy-wires are not. The pot is too fussy and feminine for this tree." - Andy Rutledge

Judge Comments:

"Nice tree for thin trunk. Looks wild and good use for trunk without much taper. I like the tree but the line above the canopy is a little straight. It works. Hard to pull off! Helps me to forgive weak base." - Guy Guidry

"Interesting and natural composition. Nice condition and preparation. The overall image would be much improved with elimination of the leafy plant from the pot and removal of the descending vertical jin. Both are very distracting and add unnecessary complexity to what would otherwise be a sublime composition." - Andy Rutledge

Judge Comments:

"Small tree with nice canopy appears to have a piece of drift wood stuck in front! Well done, a little contrived but nice. Pot is a little heavy. Perhaps tree will grow into it in future." - Guy Guidry

"Lots not to like here: inappropriate placement on an inappropriate stand, all deadwood trunk (lifeline is in back), clumsy overlarge foliage pads (too large for such a dainty trunk), and glazed pot is visually too busy." - Andy Rutledge

Judge Comments:

"Good treatment of straight line in center of composition. Hard to over come, yet a success! The development of an apex and a few years of growth will disguise any flaws" - Guy Guidry

"Two uninspiring lines punctuated by a poof of shapeless foliage. The visible guy-wire doesn’t help matters." - Andy Rutledge

"Well, done for such a thin trunk. Not easy to pull off! VERY NATURAL. Hard to make look good with the amount of space between first branch and rest of tree." - Guy Guidry

"The various elements of this one work well together. Pleasant and natural composition. The leafy plant in the pot should be removed—or—it should be larger and repositioned." - Andy Rutledge

"Pretty typical of material. Easy level of difficulty but still nice. Good match with pot!" - Guy Guidry

"A trunk this small cannot support foliage pads of these dimensions. Junipers must have jin and shari." - Andy Rutledge

Judge Comments:

"I think a little negative space between branches would be good for aesthetics. It would also be nice if the trunk peeked in and out of the foliage. Well done for such a small tree! It is a big little tree." - Guy Guidry

"A quiet and “normal” bonsai that could benefit from proper display stand. The roots are visually weak. The branches will improve in time." - Andy Rutledge

"It looks like a wild collected tree and matches well with its container. Very natural looking with good needles!" - Guy Guidry

"The pot and the material are nice, but the front branch is poorly presented/configured. The needles are overlong for such a dainty tree. Also, it must have a STAND!" - Andy Rutledge

"Interesting, natural composition. It could benefit from some taming of the foliage. The stand is the wrong color." - Andy Rutledge

Judge Comments:

"Looks like a real tree .I love it .It would be nice if the two branches on left, the main one and the one near the top had a little more foliage on them so I didn’t see everything! Great choice of pot. Very natural! Killer!" - Guy Guidry

"A powerful, evocative, natural image marred by poor placement on a too-small slab. The lower slab/stand is wrong." - Andy Rutledge
