Jim Smith is one of my friends and bonsai teachers and his trees show his great mastery of the art.

I wasn't quite aware of how versatile this Ficus salicifolia can be. It looks like one can create virtually any shape or form in any style with it. Amazing little trees.
The challenge, I guess, is to keep the empty spaces from getting overcrowded. I like a certain airyness in any bonsai, and this ficus will constantly try to defy that.

What little I know about bonsai, Jim has taught me. He is both a great and generous teacher.
But to really appreciate his trees you have to see them in person. They simply have extraordinary "presence." Truly great bonsai (like all great art) create an emotional impact when they are viewed. Jim's collection is simply stunning.

Nicely done overall. What I enjoy is he clearly has an aesthetic in mind as he creates and you see it consitently conveyed in each tree. Beautiful.
