How much should bonsai cost?

To start somewhere, assume it is a plant that most would consider of some artistic merit and potential. A bonsai with a good number of years in training, ready for display. But let it have no particular past [awards, or relevant commercial past - i.e. assume no one has put a tag on it yet].

There are too many variables to list, the basic rule, as in all things, is that something is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it....however that says nothing.

Your best bet is to show it to someone very experienced in selling and buying and get their opinion, more than one opinion helps also.

Precisely what I am asking, in a way.

I think I understand Walter Pall's take on costs, yours also - must be the hardest thing in the world to disagree with.

Obviously, asking 'how much' is an easy way to find out who is buying and who is selling ;) Still, I wonder whether under-pricing is not the discouraging side, not the other end: those bulk goods and prices may popularize some notion of bonsai, but also make the efforts of amateur growers [in the sporting sense] sound worthless outside a cramped circle.

[... post accidentally edited by Ana... ]

I try to read the write the same once more from my memory.

My quetion was: Why concern about what price a bonsai may have (unless you are buying one of course).

You cant put a general prize label on any art works, paintings, sculptures, bonsai e.g.
How will yoy value a painting without looking at the art work, but only onb the size and amount of coloures used?

Its not about money value, but about artisistic value.

Regards
Morten Albek

'Grading' bonsai on a price list would be silly and demeaning - no question. It even feels awkward writing this...

Much time out of life to only put a price on it, I say the only price is inheritance as a boy becoming a prince through a father being king.
